Uses of Multiplexer
1. Communication System: Multiplexer allows transmission of different types of data such as audio and video at the
same time using a single transmission line.
2. Telephone Network: In a telephone network, a Multiplexer help to isolate multiple audio signals sent through a
single transmission line, to reach the intended recipients.
3. Remote: Remote control used in TV, Cars, and A.C select a specific signal from many available options.
4. Transmission from the Computer System of a Satellite: A multiplexer can be used for the transmission of data
signals from the computer system of a satellite or spacecraft to the ground system using the GPS (Global Positioning
System) satellites.
Drawbacks of Multiplexer
1. Leads to a delay in switching ports and I/O signals.
2. Limitations on which ports can be used simultaneously.
Decoder vs Multiplexer
Decoder Multiplexer
1. Decoder converts binary data to Octal, Decimal 1. Multiplexer selects a single output from multiple
and Hexadecimal form binary inputs
2. Decoder is used to interpret coded data 2. MUX is used to transmit data
Let’s Revisit
♦ AND gate produces 1 as output when all its inputs are 1.
♦ OR gate produces 1 as output when any one of its inputs is 1.
♦ NOT gate inverts the output
♦ NAND and NOR gates are called universal gates as they can be used to implement operations of AND, OR and NOT gates.
♦ XOR gate produces 1 for odd combinations of 1 and 0 in other cases
♦ XNOR gate produces 0 for odd combinations of 1 and 1 for even combinations of 1 or all 0’s
♦ The half adder is a combinational circuit that is designed to perform the addition of two bits and produces the two binary
outputs as sum(S) and carry(C) bits.
♦ The full adder is a combinational circuit that is designed to perform the addition of three bits and produces the two binary
outputs as sum(S) and carry(C) bits.
♦ An Encoder is a combinational circuit that converts decimal, octal or hexadecimal numbers to its equivalent binary form.
♦ Decoder is a combinational circuit that converts any binary number to its equivalent Octal, Decimal or Hexadecimal form. It
n
has ‘n’ input lines and maximum 2 output lines.
♦ Multiplexer is a combinational circuit that selects a single output from a set of inputs. A multiplexer has 2 input lines and
n
one output line, where n is the number of selection lines.
